A Long Play's Journey Into Blight
A Film by Sarah Gidley and JP Stracco
USA, 2007
The inspiration for this
film came from attending a local production of “Long Day’s Journey
Into Night” about a year ago. We found the play repetitive,
depressing without a redemptive element and lacking dramatic
structure. Ultimately something about the play really just rubbed us
the wrong way, and we ended up making this parody. It was a really
personal project; an activity that we did just for the sake of
doing.
The short movie was shot in a night without
any script (made up as we went along), the lighting is terrible, the
sound is bad, and the Irish accents are horrendous (when we actually
remembered to do them). To be perfectly honest we were stunned that
anyone would be interested in it (especially a tribute site), but
also happy that it was appreciated. We have gotten a variety of
responses in reaction to the film that range from “great acting I
loved it and I haven’t even seen the play and now I want to” to “it
was like a bad horror movie and I never want to watch it again.”
Sarah and I both have some background in acting. I have been
shooting short films and documentaries for the past six years. Some
of the films have been on the internet on various “independent film”
type sites. I also compose all my own music on an old keyboard, then
upload it into the computer.
