What is an Editor? Saxe Commins at Work

Commins, Dorothy
Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1978
First edition, with dust jacket

Saxe Commins was the senior editor and, in the words of Bennett Cerf, "one of the great men of Random House," from 1933 until his death in 1958.  He worked with many of the major writers of an extraordinary literary era, including Theodore Dreiser, Gertrude Stein, W. H. Auden, Stephen Spender, Sinclair Lewis, James Michener, William Carlos Williams, Isak Dinesen, and, especially, Eugene O'Neill and William Faulkner.  In this engaging book, Commins's widow, Dorothy, answers the question "What is an editor?" by showing how her husband influenced the work of these important poets, playwrights, and novelists.dust jacket
