November 30th 1936 León Mirlas, Esq., My dear Mr. Mirlas, Your last letter, forwarded from Georgia, has just reached me here. I deeply appreciate your congratulations on the Nobel award, and I want you to know how grateful I am for your kindness in writing me. It is immensely gratifying to learn that the news of my being awarded this high honour was so favourably received in Buenos Aires. The cable sent by the Argentine Congress of Writers was a surprise which gave me the greatest pleasure, and I at once cabled the Sociedad my thanks for this mark of their approval. I had been meaning ever since my arrival in the West to answer your previous letter which was also forwarded to me here in Seattle. I read with the greatest interest your answer to the attack of Mr. Abramof. It is fine of you to go to all that trouble in defence of my work, and I think your article makes my position as an artist absolutely clear. As for who Abramof is, I know no more than you. If he is a North American he has no standing as a critic, for I have never even heard his name before. I shall reply to the other points in your first letter when I have more leisure. At present, as I know you will understand, I am having great difficulty in keeping up with each day's correspondence. This letter is principally to thank you for your very great kindness in writing so soon to congratulate me. Again my gratitude - and all my good wishes to you.
